The first standardized record speed and the standard for shellac records after 1920. Berliner switched from gutta percha to shellac by 1885. Shellac records were brittle and shattered fairly easily. They were made of a mixture of ⅓ shellac, ⅔ mineral filler, which was abrasive and wore down needles quickly.

This particular record, issued in 1917, is the first ever to use the term Jazz (spelled "Jass").
