Plateau designed a number of discs, which were published by Joseph Ackermann & Co. in several sets. This one is from the second set of discs published by Joseph Ackermann & Co. of London. The illustrations are by Thomas Talbot Bury. The slots and illustrations are on the same disc, as they were in Plateau's original design.

Ackermann called his first device the Phantasmascope. For the second set of discs, he called it the Fantascope. Unlike Giroux's phenakistiscope, Fantascope discs had the slots and illustrations on the same disc.
