8-hole ASCII was punched along one or both sides of cards rather than on tape. This allowed them to be read by the same mechanism on a Fridgen Flexowriter that read punched tape. Each card could be treated as a unit record, e.g., the items in an order. They could be separated and loaded individually or loaded in sequence as fanfold.
