To create molded cylinders, a thin layer of gold was first deposited on a brown wax master ("moulded" is the British spelling in use in America at that time). The gold layer was strengthened with copper using electroplating. The resulting metal cylinder was used to create another generation of metal molds that were then used to create the final black wax cylinders (Bruderhofer 2020).
