Blank cards were available to create custom patterns using a manual hole punch. But, to quote mathgrrl: "it turns out that punching cards is a PAIN. I thought it would be kind of fun, but after about a quarter of a punch card it is no longer amusing." Knitting machines are now computerized, eliminating that problem.
