Maxicode is a 2-dimensional barcode holding approximately 100 characters of data (more when compressed). It was invented by United Parcel Service and patented in 1989. The small target in the center helps align the scanned image. Maxicode was designed to support scanning on high speed conveyors and to maintain readablity when damaged.
The lower bar code, which encodes the tracking number, is a linear barcode called Code 128.
