A stencil for the Belknap automatic addressing machine. The ribbon was removed from a typewriter and the address typed onto nitrocellulose-coated silk fiber paper. The metal type slug, which normally printed a character when it struck the ribbon, removed the coating where it struck. When the stencil was positioned in the mimeograph machine, a roller forced ink through the silk where the coating had been removed.
