Title:

Le Lancier

Material:

Wood barrel, metal pins

Music for a street organ. Cylinders could be interchanged, although not all street performers could afford multiple barrels. Extended notes are stored in the form of staples that span the duration of the note. In addition to the name of the tune, there are ink notations on the barrel that are a mystery to me—some look like they might have been put there as an aid to the craftsman who pinned the barrel.

Le Lancier is a European dance popular in the 18th and 19th century. It is danced by four couples in a square and is an ancestor of the square dance.
