The larger diameter of the Salon cylinder allowed higher quality and greater volume. The duration was still the same as a standard cylinder. They required a special phonograph with a larger mandrel, although Pathe later produced phonographs with attachments that allowed both standard and Salon cylinders to be played on the same machine.
