The hill-and-dale grooves were cut into a thin coating of plaster-like material on the surface of the postcard. One of the stated advantages of Phonocartes was that they were only "readable" if you had a Phonopostal gramophone. This was also its downfall, however, since the recipient also had to have the special gramophone.
